Summer may have decided to say farewell a little earlier than expected, but we have a secret to making it feel like summer every day, listening to the debut album from Auckland based band Cool Rainbows, proudly released through NZ label Lil’ Chief Records.

Cool Rainbows have technically been lurking around the Auckland music scene for roughly 2 years now, but the main man behind the music, Djeisan Suskov, has been biding his time and cultivating Cool Rainbows’ sound until he was 100% sure he was ready to share it with the world. And it has been worth the wait!
I was lucky enough to live with Djeisan for a year at the very beginning of Cool Rainbows, and let me tell you it has been amazing hearing the music evolve from what Djesian would record as a one man band in our sunroom in Kingsland to the polished songs on Whale Rocket, which have been influenced by his fellow band members; Alex Freer, Cass Mitchell and Emily Suskov (Djeisan’s beautiful wife) who as a collective form Cool Rainbows.

Since releasing their first single and video for a Southern Summer Sun, in December, Cool rainbows have received a lot of interest, appearing all over international music websites. You can see and hear what created all the attention bellow its well worth a gander.

You can listen to snippets from Whale Rocket here on Lil Chief’s website ( a few of our favourites are Reality and a Clue, Lets Just be Together and Tidal Wave), and also purchase the album on CD and Vinyl, not just any old vinyl that is – bright blue vinyl! The contrast of the vibrant vinyl against the wonderful album artwork created by Gerogie Craw and Reuben Stephens is a real treat!

So if you’re feeling a bit gloomy on dull and dreary give Whale Rocket a listen, it makes even the gloomiest of days seem magical.
